The project

The design of the Iran Pavilion for Expo Milano 2015 brings together the values of the Iranian people, embodied in the sofreh, the ritual cloth laid on the table during celebrations. The pavilion was shaped like a rolled cloth, intersected by a "wind tower", a reference to the traditional architecture of desert regions. The curved structure runs along the long side of the plot, with an overall length of 89 m and a width of approximately 15 m. It meets the ground at the Decumano, the main thoroughfare from which visitors arrive, and rises to 4.5 m on the opposite side, overlooking the seating area of the open-air theatre. The structure is supported by a framework of metal arches resting on steel-section columns, clad externally in PVC and decorated internally with a series of reflective triangular metal panels inspired by Persian mosaics. Lighting is provided entirely by high-efficiency LEDs, delivering distinctive colour rendering and precisely directed illumination.
